"Fifi was probably born in 1958 and is the daughter of Flo. Fifi has had nine births and out of those, eight chimpls live today. She is an incredible mother and a very careful and strong female. It is not easy to keep children alive in the wild as many dangers and other hurdles make life difficult. Tow of her sons have acquired leadership consecutively. Freud was an alpha male for close to 5 years until his brother Frodo overthrew him. This happened when Freud got sick from scabies in 1997. When he recovered from the disease his brother was already in power and he had no way to regain his former position.

Fifi is currently 44 years old and is the oldest chimpanzee living in Gombe National Park. At the moment she is raising Flirt, who is now over three years old, and her new baby Furaha born in October 2002 (whose name means joy in Swahili). Fifi is a very experienced mother and her style of raising her offspring is unique. She rests a lot, does not travel much and when the group moves further on she prefers staying behind to avoid strenuous investment of time and energy. Flirt is relatively big in size when compared to her peers such as Gremlin's twins. She is very playful and active and now walks longer distances by herself when accompanied by her mother and brothers.

Fifi continues to hold a dominant position in her community. She also continues her ties with other members of her family. She is more visibly relaxed when Fanni, one of her older daughters, is around Fuhara then when the other female community members approach her and her baby. Fifi also stood in support of her older son Frodo while other males displayed and attacked him receiving a few superficial wounds herself. Fifi is a shinning example to the other female chimps around her and continues to be a positive force in the Gombe National Park." -JGI Guardian Packet

I pray that we may learn the peace that comes with forgiving and the strength we gain in loving; that we may learn to take nothing for granted in this life; that we learn to see and understand with our hearts; that we learn to join in our being." - Jane Godall
